The Auditor's office handles the calculation of property tax rates, delinquent taxes, property transfers, and county ditch administration. You may purchase the Steele County Plat book at this office. In addition they issue hunting and fishing licenses, as well as the following miscellaneous licenses as: auctioneers, liquor, tattoo, transient merchants, and peddlers.
Elections are conducted out of this office and they handle all county voter registration, absentee ballots and is the central counting center.
This office is responsible for the internal county functions of payroll, accounts receivable/payable, and recording of commissioner minutes.
The Assessor's Office is responsible for placing an estimate of market value and classifying each property every year as of the assessment date, January 2nd. The values and classifications are used in conjunction with other factors for determining real estate taxes payable in the following year.
The mission of Steele County’s Office of Geographic Systems (GIS) is to develop, implement and maintain geographically based information for county departments, other local governmental bodies, private companies, and the general public. This office is located in the lower level of the Steele County Administration Center.
Planning & Zoning
The Planning and Zoning office is located in the lower level of the Steele County Administration Building, 630 Florence Ave, Owatonna MN 55060.
Planning & Zoning/Building Inspection administers land use and zoning ordinances for rural portions of Steele County, and Uniform Building Code for the rural areas as well as the cities of Medford and Blooming Prairie. Some of the land use regulations include feedlots, individual sewage treatment systems, subdivision, floodplains and shoreland. Permits commonly handled by this office are building permits, septic system permits, variance requests, rezoning requests and conditional use permits. The department also maintains addresses and street naming, and numbering county-wide for the E-911 system.
The Recorder's Office is responsible for the legal records of all real estate in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate documents are recorded and/or filed here. There is a recording fee for all documents. Copies of recorded documents can be obtained for a fee.
As Registrar of Titles, this office generates Certificates of Title conveying land under the Torrens land system.
Military Service Discharges are recorded and no fee is charged for that service. County Officials Bonds and Oaths of Office, official plats of land in the city and rural area and Federal and State Tax Liens are filed in the Recorders Office. This office will assist customers in obtaining legal descriptions for Steele County property as well as determining ownership of parcels of land.
This office also handles all Vital Records (Marriage, Birth, and Death records) for Steele County.
We are a Passport Facility for Steele County, we do new passports along with renewal of passports and passport photos.
The Treasurer's office handles the receipt of all Real Estate Taxes, Mobile Home Taxes, State Deed Taxes on property transfers and Mortgage Registry Tax on mortgages filed in Steele County.
Real Estate Tax Statements are mailed in late March with payments due first half on May 15th and second half on October 15th.
Mobile Home Tax Statements are mailed in mid-July with payments due first half on August 31st and second half on November 15th.
