What does the Transportation Department do?

The Transportation Department is administered by an appointed county engineer and is broken down into administrative, engineering, and maintenance functional areas. While the functional areas provide distinct services; collaboration and coordination throughout the department, with other county departments and external agencies is standard operating procedure in service delivery.

The Transportation Department is responsible for the management of capital infrastructure with costs of $88,375,726. This infrastructure consists of highways, bridges, buildings, and highway equipment.

The Steele County transportation infrastructure consists of over 366 centerline miles of road including 129 bridges. The highway system is categorized by funding sources. County State Aid Highways (CSAH) consist of 305 miles and gas tax revenue is distributed by the State of Minnesota to assist in the construction and maintenance of these highways. County Roads (CR) consist of 64 miles and the local property tax levy is the sole source of funding for the construction and maintenance of these roads.

Five buildings make up the maintenance complex at 828 Hoffman Drive and North Street. Since the flood of 2010, the maintenance operations moved to a temporary leased facility located at 900 30th Place NW. Transportation Department offices reside at the Annex Building at 635 Florence Avenue.

Transportation Department equipment consists of 65 major units ranging from snow plow trucks, excavator, dozer, loader, backhoes, tractors, to pick-ups. Major to minor attachments make up an additional 20 pieces of equipment.
