Safety Tips for Outdoor Cooking

Barbecues - Portable grills, a popular back yard item during the summer months, sometimes pose a danger because they can tip over easily and because people often stand too close to them. Children sometimes are tempted to poke at the fire, unaware of the danger. Parents should never leave grills unattended.

Camp Fires - Camp fires, also popular in summer, can be safe and fun when a few simple precautions are followed. Although children should be taught never to build a camp fire without an adult present, they should learn the importance of building fires in safe, authorized areas away from tree trunks, overhanging branches, dry leaves or other kindling. Camp fires should never be left unattended and should be thoroughly drenched or smothered with dirt or sand before campers leave the site.
