First Aid Tips

NOT BREATHING:

  • Open airway - tilt head back, lift chin
  • Breathe - give two breaths, blowing in the mouth

NO PULSE:

  • Pulse - check along side of the Adams Apple for a pulse
  • Compressions - push on the middle of the chest, just above the little notch in the lower half of the chest

CHOKING:

If a person cannot speak - give upward abdomen thrusts and continue until object discharges or the person becomes unconscious

UNCONSCIOUS:

Open airway and attempt to blow into mouth, if unsuccessful, place person on their back and do 5 abdominal thrusts, finger sweep and attempt to blow again

BURNS:

If no open wounds, cool with water, but don't let the person start shivering

CHEMICAL BURNS:

Wash immediately with large amounts of water. Flush eyes for at least 20 minutes

SEIZURES:

Move objects away from person, DON'T PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR MOUTH, turn on their side in case of vomiting

BLEEDING:

Apply direct pressure to stop bleeding

CHEST PAIN:

Stop any activity that they are doing, sit the person down, loosen any tight clothing they have on, reassure the person

BROKEN BONES:

Suspect a fracture - do not move the person. Apply ice, not directly on skin. If a major joint, DO NOT MOVE THE PERSON
